What is Theyyam ritual?

Theyyam is a traditional ritualistic performance art originating from the Indian state of Kerala, primarily practiced in the northern regions such as Kannur and Kasaragod. It involves elaborate costumes, face painting, and elaborate ceremonies to invoke divine spirits, with performers embodying deities, ancestors, or mythological characters to bless the community, ward off evil, and uphold cultural and religious traditions. Theyyam is deeply rooted in local folklore and is characterised by vibrant dance, music, and spiritual rituals, often performed in temples or sacred groves, serving as a means of connecting the community with its spiritual heritage.
